01 · SYSTEM
Target architecture
HydRON is being developed as an optical network rather than a single point-to-point terminal. Collector spacecraft, optical crosslinks, network management and ground gateways are intended to route high-capacity traffic across different orbital layers.
02 · EVIDENCE
Evidence snapshot
- 01
ESA describes HydRON as a “fibre in the sky” concept.
- 02
Element #1 and Element #2 industrial development contracts were announced in 2024 and 2025.
- 03
The programme target is terabit-capacity optical transport, not an already achieved operational record.
03 · SIGNIFICANCE
Why it matters
If demonstrated, HydRON would shift optical space communications from isolated high-speed links toward routed photonic infrastructure.
